If you’re planning on staying at Casale Zeno the beautiful olive farm and Podere near Orvieto, then a day trip to Bolsena should definitely be on your itinerary. This picturesque town, located just 30 kilometres from Orvieto or just under 30 minutes driving is a gem of a destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage.

Bolsena is located on the shores of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The lake is a popular destination for swimming, fishing, and boating, and its crystal-clear waters offer a refreshing respite from the summer heat. But there’s more to Bolsena than just its stunning natural surroundings.

The town has a rich heritage of traditions and history that dates back thousands of years. According to legend, Bolsena was founded by the Etruscans, an ancient civilization that lived in central Italy before the rise of the Roman Empire. The Etruscans believed that Lake Bolsena was the entrance to the underworld, and they built their tombs and temples in the area.

In the Middle Ages, Bolsena became an important pilgrimage site thanks to the Miracle of Bolsena. According to legend, a doubting priest was celebrating Mass in the town when the bread and wine he was holding miraculously turned into human flesh and blood. The event is commemorated every year with a solemn procession through the town.

Bolsena’s rich history is also evident in its architecture. The town’s medieval center is filled with narrow streets and ancient buildings, including the impressive Castle of Bolsena, which dates back to the 12th century. The castle houses a museum that showcases the town’s history and culture, including its ancient Etruscan roots.

But Bolsena isn’t just a museum piece – it’s a living, breathing town that’s home to a vibrant community of artisans, farmers, and fishermen. The town’s weekly market is a lively affair, with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. And the local restaurants serve up delicious dishes made with the freshest ingredients, including fish caught in the lake and vegetables grown in the surrounding fields.

A day in Bolsena is a chance to immerse yourself in the history, culture, and natural beauty of this unique corner of Italy. Whether you spend your time exploring the ancient ruins, lounging on the beach, or sampling the local cuisine, you’re sure to leave with a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of this beautiful town.

If you want an exploration and fitness day why not take one of the bikes from Casale Zeno and head to Bolsena via Castel Giorgio. The route there which is predominantly flatter and mostly downhill should take around 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. For the return journey you need to leave a little longer, say 1 hour 45 minutes for either the short sharp incline via the castle or the easier more gradual climb which brings you via San Lorenzo.

Plenty of things to do when you are at the lake, just take a paddle in the surprisingly warm lake or hire from your hosts paddle boards and snorkeling gear. Why not make a day of it and hire one of the many speed boats available and tour the two islands and the coast or just chill in one of the many restaurants and enjoy the catch of the day.
